In the early 21st century, an alien attack drove humanity to the brink of extinction. A thousand years after their defeat, the aliens haven't been seen since.

Rada Pence has spent the last three years driving carts for an independent mining crew. Most likely, that's how she'll die, too. Then, deep beneath the ice of a Neptune moon, her crew discovers a long-lost ship. If it's from Earth's first space age, it would be worth millions.

When they dig down to it, they discover it's not human - it's alien. And its secrets are worth killing for.

I just finished book 7 of the Breakers series and thought I'd try another of the author's series. This book is a page turner and I was quickly engrossed in the story, I read almost the whole thing in one sitting. It is set in the distant future of the Breakers universe. As a prequel it primarily introduces the main character and sets the stage for the rest of the books.

The book mentions the technology of the now-space-faring human race briefly here and there but doesn't go into much detail, which allows the story to move along but if you are a sci fi nerd doesn't give you any satisfying explanations for how things work. Like Star Trek and Battlestar Galactica it glosses over "hard problems" of space flight like gravity, radiation, and the time it takes to travel from one place to another. I guess this is 900 years in the future or something but it definitely requires some suspension of disbelief. Maybe this is better explained in the later books in the series which I haven't read yet.
Another criticism is that the characters are all generally shallow, each just plugged into a space in the plot, which is basically very linear. The writing is a bit too breezy and predictable at times, doesn't really have much depth. This book feels like something dashed off in a hurry, perhaps because the original first book in the series was too hard to understand. At less than 300 pages I'm not sure it was worth $3. Anyway a good enough read and I'll be buying the next book.

Rebel Rebel Stars Book 0 (Audible Audio Edition) Edward W Robertson Ray Chase Books Reviews

It seems logical to me that the author wrote this book that serves to tie this series to his previous "Breaker" series. Without going into a lot of detail about the earlier books, he manages to provide enough information so that new readers don't have trouble understanding what's going on. I do recommend that those who haven't read the earlier series do so, however, simply because (despite some wrinkles that I found annoying and unnecessary) those 7 (soon to be 8) books are highly enjoyable. As in all his earlier works, Mr. Robinson manages to snag the reader's attention immediately and keep that interest from beginning to end. This book, billed as a "prequel" to the Rebel Stars series, is set some 900 years after an alien virus attack on earth almost wiped out humanity. Ultimately, survivors of the virus managed to defeat the aliens before they could finish the annihilation of the surviving humans. In the 9 centuries since that time, humans have traveled in space and colonized many locations, but only within the confines of our Solar System. Now, using captured alien technology, the people are poised to try that which has so far been impossible to break out of the solar system and travel to the stars. An earlier reviewer lamented the lack of technical details about spaceship propulsion, but I find that unnecessary; it's sufficient to understand that, in 900 years, there would be great advances in such engineering. I found the book to be a good read, and am glad that the author didn't get bogged down in such details. As in his earlier books, Mr. Robinson tells two different stories, with different casts of characters, intended to converge later in the book. I appreciate this, as he shifts back and forth between the stories. If it weren't for the abrupt transition from one to the other, I would not be able to put the book down until I had read the entire thing. The minor things about this author's storytelling that bother me are just that - minor - so I resisted the urge to go with 4 stars. I am distracted by the injection of "Medieval" things, such as knights in armor, castles with moats and guard towers, research geeks known as "Lords of the True Realm" and so forth, which became somewhat obnoxious in the earlier series, but other readers may not find it bothersome. I recommend this book and any other by Edward W. Robinson; his storytelling will grab your attention and hold on to it.
You don't have to read any of Breakers Series books to get into this book/series but you'd certainly be foolish to pass up the chance to enjoy them as well.

The pacing of Rebel, for me, had a good slow/quick balance and I enjoyed the action/reflection balance too. For me the most exciting parts are the various stations and the taste of Cyber Punk references they include. Robertson played around with various elements of this with his multiverse jumping Cutting Room series. In this context I think those previous efforts have paid off to present a world that seems utterly realistic with people naturally attuned to their favorite tech so that it doesn't become the focus and instead falls to the background. Like much of his work, I think this is a character driven narrative and this book introduces not only the characters but also the events that motivate them into the next book. While I'm not inclined to embrace the 'lucky accidents' that save our heroine, they aren't IMHO excessive and beyond being adopted by a bazillionaire, they basically fall well within the realm of creating your own luck.

I think this book sets up the series in a wonderful way and I can't wait to read what comes next!
The Rebel Star Series--after becoming hooked on and reading the Breakers series--is truly amazing. I put the first few Breakers in a package on my when I went to India last summer to read in the evenings, as it was free. Strangely, my daughter found it at the same time and put it on hers. I was riveted to the story woven through the Breakers. Between us, we have bought all the books. She has even started re-reading the Breakers again.

While this story is 1000 years in the future of the that, it was spectacular as well, with references to the original series throughout. I loved this because I am one of those people that want to know what happens after.

When I describe it to people, I always mention Orson Scott Cards' Ender series. I know they are very different types of books, but the quality and the way they hooked me in are the same.

Both of these series are spectacular! But read them all!
